Immature Marriage More Likely to End in Divorce

Immature Marriage More Likely to End in DivorceA popular myth about marriage in the U.S. is that half of all first marriages end in divorce. Data says that the divorce rate peaked at 40 percent in 1980 and has been declining since. Thus, it is false to assume that a marriage is just as likely to fail as succeed because it is a first marriage. However, there is a demographic that is more likely to divorce from their first marriage. They are people who:

  • Marry when they are younger than 25;
  • Do not have a college education; and
  • Are in a lower income class.

These characteristics identify people who are getting married when they are still immature.

Marriage Is Work

Young people are excited when they fall in love for the first time. They feel a mixture of physical attraction, pure adoration and enjoyment in having fun together. A young couple may believe that these feelings are enough to support a long-lasting marriage. However, people with this immature view of marriage do not understand how it works. People in a marriage must:

  • Work together in fulfilling their adult responsibilities;
  • Make selfless decisions that benefit each other rather than just themselves;
  • Compromise during arguments; and
  • Realize that they share each other’s problems.

Coming of Age

When becoming young adults, people are still in the process of discovering themselves. Their interests and desires may greatly change in the next 10 years. Couples may get along well when they are immature but realize that they are no longer compatible when they mature. Getting married at a young age can inhibit a person’s growth. He or she is defined by a committed relationship when he or she should be learning more about him or herself.

Parent Factor

Having a child changes the nature of a young relationship. The parents will be forever connected to each other through the child, so there is added pressure to stay together. Getting married seems like a responsible decision when becoming parents, but such marriages can be fraught with trouble. The people marry out of a sense of obligation rather than an actual connection. If the people are not compatible, a child will not make the marriage healthier or stronger.

Young Divorce

It can be difficult for young people to admit that they made a mistake in getting married. They may be willing to stay in an abusive or miserable relationship because they are afraid of becoming single and alone.
