Points During Marriage When Divorce Is Most Likely

Points During Marriage When Divorce Is Most LikelyCompiled statistical data cannot predict when an individual marriage will end in divorce, but that does not stop researchers from trying. There are too many reasons why people get divorced that can develop at any point in the marriage, such as personality conflicts, acts of infidelity or general dissatisfaction. By studying data, researchers have noticed that there are points in the duration of a marriage when more divorces tend to occur. From there, they consider what relationship factors may have changed to make divorce more likely. Researchers have identified three points in a marriage when the risk of divorce seems to increase.

The First Year

The start of a marriage is logically a time when it is vulnerable. Despite the honeymoon period, there are several reasons why a marriage may last a year or less:

  • Couples may rush into marriages that were never going to work;
  • Financial hardship can test the strength of a marriage;
  • It is easier to divorce early because there is less emotionally invested in a marriage;
  • There are fewer marital properties to divide; and
  • The couple is unlikely to have had children.

Seven-Year Itch

Once a couple has gotten through the first two years of marriage, their chances of staying together improve. They have settled into married life and are likely in a more stable position. The third year of a marriage is also when some couples start having children, which can be a unifying factor. However, divorce statistics suggest that the so-called seven-year itch is real. The theory is that it takes seven years in a marriage for spouses to grow tired of each other and want someone new. It may take that long for some people to realize and admit that they are unsatisfied with their marriages. The elation of having a child may wear off after a couple of years, making divorce seem like more of a possibility.

20-Year Mark

Conventional wisdom says that a marriage that lasts 10 years is unlikely to ever end in divorce. Couples become more practical about what they want from their marriages and have stronger commitments towards each other. There is a slight uptick in the divorce rate when a marriage reaches 15-to-20 years. The reason for the increase has more to do with the stage of life people are at. It is typically around the 20-year mark that children are nearing adulthood and retirement is in sight. These changes cause people to reconsider what will make them happy. It may be the last chance for them to leave an unsatisfying marriage while they are young enough to start a new life.
